Best bakeries in Scenic Rim, Ipswich
6 min read

What’s the best thing since sliced bread?

Not much.

This is why the Guardian and Tribune has located some local bakeries that will ‘butter you up’ – and it’s just the first in a series of visits we plan to make around the region. Whether you’re hunting for a sourdough, something to appease the sweet tooth or perhaps a sandwich or maybe even something gluten free to reduce the bloat, then get ‘bready’ because we’ve got you covered.

Tamborine Mountain - Eagle Heights Bakery

Delightful and traditional are our words to describe Scenic Rim’s Eagle Heights Bakery on Mount Tamborine.

Sometimes, it’s nice to know where to go to buy the best bread for your homemade smashed avocado and with fifteen years’ experience kneading the dough, it’s hard to go past the sourdough here.

There are 30 different breads to choose from including an organic range. Not to mention, there are pies, cakes and sweets as well, so if you’re in dire need of a hangover cure or merely seeking a loaf good enough to eat on its own, then this is the bakehouse for you.

Ipswich - Hunter Street Bakery and Cafe

Acclaimed for its sandwich boxes, Hunter Street Bakery and Café is a hidden jewel for those searching for a healthy lunch time feed.

The satisfying sandwich box consists of six triangles, meaning you end up with one and a half sandwiches, each with a different filling. Perfect for the indecisive among us. With a reputation for quality and consistency, it’s no wonder the Hunter Street Bakery and Café is a local hangout.

Tamborine Mountain - Gable Lane French Patisserie and Deli

The closest thing you will get to strolling along the romantic streets of Paris is stepping into Mount Tamborine’s Gable Lane French Patisserie and Deli.

Prepared daily by a local French chef, this artisan bakery is our pick for almond croissants and authentic French-style pastries.

Perched on the Gallery walk, or as it’s more commonly known, Long Street, the six-month-old French Patisserie and Deli also serves medium roasted specialty coffee with malt and a hint of dark chocolate. However, the fun doesn’t stop there. There’s also cheeses from Australia and New Zealand as well as locally produced olives, oils and salts. A fresh almond croissant, a sticky beak at the produce and a delicious coffee on Tamborine Mountain is a great start to the day.

Ipswich - The Cake Mobb

A delicate shopfront appearance dating back to 1865 in Ipswich’s historic ‘top of town’ precinct, The Cake Mobb is not only a trip down memory lane but also a trip worth taking. With twenty-two cake flavours to choose from including cherry ripe and Tim Tam, toasties, biscuits, coffee and more, this is a one stop shop for sugar and hunger cravings combined.

Tamborine Mountain - Wilderflower & Wanderberries

Judging by the hype that this little bakery has already caused in the first eighteen months since opening, Wilderflower and Wanderberries is doing something right. And with a motto that says, ‘everyone deserves to eat extraordinary cake,’ these guys are leading the way in an allergen-friendly bakery.

Yes, that’s right. For those who suffer from intolerances or severe allergies, this will undoubtedly become your mouth-watering haven. The kitchen is completely top-eight allergen free, meaning all baked goodies are free from preservatives, gluten, dairy, egg, shellfish, wheat, fish, soy, peanuts and more.

What’s even more interesting is that this is the only bakery in Australia which does this and it’s right on our own doorstep. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying one of their cakes.

Aratula - Arthur Clive’s Family Bakehouse

Coffee, pies, bread? Yes please!

Arthur Clive’s is a family-owned bakery. In fact, the Pennells have been producing baked goods in the area since 1936. Now with outlets in both Aratula and Boonah, this is a one stop shop to see the Pennells in business.

They take pride in their fresh products made every day, preservative free of course. And it’s no secret that they are a local favourite when they’re selling 3,000 pies per week.

However, it’s the sourdough and the lamingtons which stand out the most. Pair that with their own signature blend coffee and you will not be disappointed.

Boonah - Sugarloaf

This traditional, old fashioned bakery in the heart of Boonah’s High Street is another local favourite.

Although the bakery does have its fair share of freshly baked goods for those sweet tooth fiends among us, don’t let the name ‘Sugarloaf’ deter you as it’s also renowned for its pies, pastries and freshly made sandwiches.

Head inside to be greeted with a country smile and be sure to take a good look at the delicious array in the display cabinets.

Canungra - Flesser’s Bakery

Revisit the 70s at Flesser’s Bakery.

Grant Flesser began his apprenticeship as a pastry cook when he was 17 and has never looked back.

Now, his bakery in Canungra has become a destination for vanilla slices, family fruit pies, bar cakes and Swiss roles to name a few. Not to mention his pies are absolutely drool worthy.

So, if you’re hunting down a 70s-style feed then you must visit Flesser’s Bakery in the town of Canungra. And if you don’t walk away with a vanilla slice in hand, or two … you are missing out.

Tamborine Mountain - Yasabel Cottage Kitchen

Although not a traditional style bakery, Yasabel Cottage Kitchen can be found at ‘The Green Shed’ every second Sunday of the month and at school markets on the last Sunday of the month on Mount Tamborine.

The idea started as a hobby for local couple Hala and Cameron Dunbar and in 2016, Yasabel Cottage Kitchen was born.

Their main goal was to bring back old-fashioned baking, you know, that smell in the kitchen when you came home from school, or the smell of freshly bread baked on a Sunday.

They specialise in sourdough breads, apple pies, cakes and spinach and ricotta croissants.

Laidley - Golden Harvest Bakery

Some may think running a bakery might be ‘a piece of cake’ however imagine being a full-time doctor with a bakery business on the side.

Well, that’s what’s happened at Golden Harvest Bakery in Laidley.

Originally from Atherton in Far North Queensland, a local doctor bought the Golden Harvest Bakery in 2018 to keep his carb-loaded passion alive in the small town and now, the business is booming.

Try a bacon and cheese pie, or perhaps a chunky steak pie might be on your agenda. The quality is outstanding, and the team here use local ingredients. However, their claim to fame is definitely their fresh Agege bread, so make sure to purchase a loaf … or several.
