FASSIFERN Bombers women’s co-coach Cary Cobbin had an extra reason to savour his side’s historic victory in the SE Women’s South Community competition.
His team’s spirited first win fittingly came on the Bombers’ annual Ladies Day, where the club’s dedicated female helpers receive special treatment at Hayes Oval.
The Bombers women beat Slacks Creek 12-10 in a hard-fought battle, securing their first ever win for the club at the perfect time.
“It’s bloody awesome,” Cobbin said, having played a leading role establishing the Bombers’ first senior women’s side.
“It’s a pretty big day for the club and for the ladies to do that at home, super, super happy.”
Fassifern’s try scorers on a memorable day were five-eight Emma Bell, centre Charlotte Ott and fullback Gemma Range.
But Cobbin was delighted to see everyone share the glory in the team captained by lock Caitlin Robinson-Cleary, who returned six years after being injured.
“It’s been an emotional rollercoaster for the girls,” the proud Bombers clubman said.
“I’m just so proud to be part of it.”
Before torrential rain swept across Hayes Oval last Saturday night, a large group of Bombers women enjoyed cocktails and drinks in the outdoor “lounge” set up at Hayes Oval.
More than $10,000 was raised from gate takings and other Bombers activities on the day with funds going towards ovarian cancer research.
The Bombers Old Boys also presented life membership to former committee member Graham “Lew” Lutter who passed away last December. Lew’s family accepted the honour.
