As I’m typing this, the persistent ear worm call of our first Oriole of the Spring, a male, announces his arrival. The sound, variously described in the field guides as “rolling, mellow, oft-repeated”, “resonant, clear, musical” and “distinctive, familiar, loud, melodious, noisy and conspicuous” also evokes descriptions like “monotonous” and “annoying.” Does this bird have a stop button, or is his voice box stuck on “repeat?”
