A MASTERFUL double century by Harry Wood has provided another massive boost for the Ipswich Hornets hoping to keep their Queensland Premier Grade finals hopes alive.
Wood lifted his team's spirits before Christmas scoring 146 and helping the Hornets complete a wonderful run chase against Sandgate Redcliffe.
In the latest match against home team Toombul, Wood compiled 201 from 233 deliveries, featuring 19 fours and four sixes.
Wood's sensational innings was the highest scored by a Hornets player, surpassing the 200 not out achieved by first grade opener Levi Thomson-Matthews against South Brisbane at Baxter Oval in November 2018.
Noah van de Werken scored 193 in a third grade game against University at Northgate in November 2015.
Wood also shared in the highest partnership at the Hornets. Wood and middle order batsman Harry Austin (96) put on 241 runs for the fifth wicket as the Hornets finished the first day's play with a healthy 425 run total.
The Hornets will be after vital points when the match resumes at Nundah on Saturday.
The Hornets second graders also bounced back strongly from a previous round loss to Souths.
They dismissed Toombul for 206 at Baxter Oval with Sean Lutter snaring 5/47 and Paul Nasser taking 4/44.
The Hornets can strengthen their finals' prospects by building on their 1/23 first innings start.
In the latest Community Cricket Division 1 matches, Laidley (5/137) consolidated second place by defeating Lockyer Valley Vikings (9/134) at Bichel Oval.
Northsiders (4/118) kept pressure on Laidley by accounting for Thunder (116) at Tivoli.
Competition leaders Centrals (230) continued their impressive run beating Brothers (148) at Amberley.
