It’s more than a century old. In its former life it temporarily housed an accused murderer or two, was used as a lock-up for rowdy drunks when the town had two pubs and on occasion, was used as a cooling off pen for the wilfully pugnacious. That is well in its past. The little building has more recently been used as a storeroom or a cubby house for children of the local police family in residence. But on Thursday, last week, newly installed Kalbar Officer in Charge, Senior Const Phil Ortlipp found an eerie new purpose for the old timber jail in the grounds of the police station. “It was transformed for the occasion into a chilling scene of ghostly prisoners and long-lost souls,” says Phil. “The old jail cell brings its own authentic eeriness, enhanced by lights, fog, haunted sounds, and glimpses of its occupants.” And with that, the old jail became an added attraction on the already popular, annual Kalbar Halloween trail.
