Former Ipswich Mayor John Nugent has called for a return to single councillor divisions at the next election arguing the boundary shake-up has not worked.

Mr Nugent, who successfully transitioned the city’s last major boundary shake-up after amalgamation in 1995, said consultation with residents on the latest change was inadequate and the current boundaries had serious flaws.

He said the State Government’s intervention after charges were laid on former mayors Paul Pisasale and Andrew Antoniolli was counter-productive to the functions of local government.

“The State Government has made a complete mess of the outcome,” Mr Nugent said.

“We are the only council in Queensland to have dual-member divisions and Rosewood and Grandchester aren’t even in the same division.

“It has gone backwards. I can’t understand why they would change the system in Ipswich to a model different to every other council in Queensland.”

Mr Nugent said not only did the four divisions contain little sense of common community, he said dual representation resulted in inferior representation.

“What happens in one of these divisions when you elect two people who are rivals? That can happen,” he said.
