Fassifern develops exciting netball talent at carnival, new program

THE Fassifern Netball Association (FNA)  introduced a specially designed pilot program called “Little Nettys’’ as  players of all ages enjoyed the recent Scenic Rim Challenge carnival.

Fassifern entered nine teams at the 11th annual carnival hosted by Beaudesert.

Every year, Fassifern fields sides across the grades, in a day of competition against opponents from Beaudesert, Tamborine and Beechmont.

This year, the host centre had 10 teams with Tamborine entering 11 and Beechmont three sides.

FNA was represented by at least one side in every division from 7/8 year olds through to the Open division, which attracted one of the largest contingents.

Official Sonya Gibson said  FNA’s three representative teams showcased their skills.

“Wearing their trademark red, white and blue, all Fassifern teams held their own against the larger associations of Beaudesert and Tamborine,” Sonya said.

“The Scenic Rim Challenge carnival allows local clubs to play together with friendly competition.

“It is a fun day with plenty of inclusive talent, and encourages connection within the Scenic Rim netball associations as well as being a unique carnival within the area.”

Fassifern enjoyed a successful day winning the 13/14 years division.

Fassifern teams also came second in the 11/12 and 7/8 divisions.

“Every player played the game with a smile, and it was great to see the volunteers and support that the players had in every game,” Sonya said.

The association’s three representative teams competing in the Darling Downs Interdistrict Carnivals are getting ready for final day in Toowoomba on Sunday.

In another exciting development, FNA launched its “Little Nettys” program provided by Netball Queensland (NQ).

“We are one of the first associations to try it,” FNA president Amanda Dover.

“It's a program designed for 3-4 year olds as an introduction into our amazing sport.”

Regional gym owner and mother of two, Lisa Oehlmann, is coach and program facilitator.

“The kids love her,” Amanda said.

“Lisa grew up at FNA and has played rep and club netball, coached teams.

“She was also the youngest member [aged 16] to ever to receive their C-badge for umpiring.”
