A fatal head on collision between two vehicles outside Aratula has led to the closure of the Cunningham Highway in both directions.

It is not expected to re-open for several hours.

There are diversions in place for ordinary vehicles between Boonah Fassifern Road and Lake Moogerah Road but heavy vehicles have been advised to seek an alternate route and avoid the area completely.

Boonah Police report that the accident happened at around 8am on the hill leading into the township.

There were three people in one of the vehicles and all have been transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle was declared deceased at the scene.
