Boonah grazier hopes for another win

BEN Weiland is looking forward to the Kalbar Show and presenting beasts from his stud herd of shorthorn cattle to judges.
The cattleman and his family own a 100 acre [40 hectare] property in Mount Alford.
The Weiland’s run 35 cows on their land and use them to breed bulls they then sell throughout Queensland and New South Wales.
Ben entered a heifer in the Boonah Show and won first in his category.
He will be entering cattle in the Kalbar Show as well but said the heifer that won first place at Boonah wouldn’t be competing.
“She’s having a rest and getting ready for this year’s Ekka,” he said.
He said he liked to work with his cattle in the week’s leading up to a show to get them as quiet as possible.
“We spend time washing, clipping, parading and leading them so they are calm,” he said.
“We also make sure they are getting fed all the right nutrition and are in good show order.”
While Boonah’s winning heifer is taking a break, other cattle from the herd now have a chance to take home the winning sash.
“We are taking a few different shorthorns to Kalbar Show because we want to give other cattle the experience and get them nice and quiet,” he said.
“Fingers crossed we win again.”
Mr Weiland said his family had been showing cattle his ‘whole life’ and while he may have missed one or two, he’d attended almost every Kalbar and Boonah Show.
“I live on the Sunshine Coast now with my partner Madison but spend a lot of time at my family’s farm,” he said.
“I definitely look forward to coming back to Boonah, going to the shows, supporting the community and catching up with old friends.”
