INCREASINGLY regular sightings of red deer suggest they are expanding their range into environments contiguous with the core red deer area, including into the outer suburbs of Brisbane.
These are the findings of the Queensland Department of Agriculture (DAFF), who estimate there are around 10,000 to 15,000 red deer within southeast Queensland.
Burnett Creek landholder Glen Fearby said feral deer were ‘making a bit of a nuisance of themselves’ over and around the Teviot.
“They are getting into the cultivation like the oats that’s all been planted, and down Wyaralong way too,” he said.
“I saw a pretty big one by Wyaralong lying dead on the side of the road and talked to a bloke who works at Highchester and drives there every day, he said he’s always seeing them on the road.”
He said it was mostly the Red Deer species that was seen.
