For the first time this century, a jabiru has been sighted in a local swamp, which was once regularly visited by a breeding pair. Sightings of jabiru (more correctly known as the Black-necked stork) haven’t been reported in the general area of this particular Fassifern swamp since the late 1990s – and using the phone calls we received at the Guardian as a gauge, its return was cause for celebration.
