COMMUNITY feedback was positive and more landholders became involved in Scenic Rim council’s 1080 baiting program following the Fassifern Guardian’s coverage of the campaign reported Councillor Marshall Chalk.
“We had people phone and email us wanting to take part,” he said.
“Landholders new to the area also got in touch to ask what the program was about and how they could be involved.
“Most calls and emails go through to council staff so more than just those who contacted me are getting involved.”
He said the program was run biannually but bait could be collected from council at any time.
“Ideally things need to be run systematically in order to get proper control of the problem,” he said.
“When things are done piece meal it isn’t as effective because wild dogs find safe havens on other properties.”
He said it was important landholders took part in council run programs whether that be creating fire breaks, tackling problem weeds or controlling wild dogs.
He said there had been an influx of new property owners who were unaware of the baiting program and the implications around not taking part.
“If you have a property that is 100 acres [40 hectares] or over, you can participate in the program,” he said.
“Many blocks of land are around that size so it’s not just the larger landholders who are able to take part.”
