Mt Alford steer wins heavyweight Ekka prize

A Scenic Rim steer has stolen the show in the Champion Heavyweight Carcass class at this year’s Ekka carcass competition.

Mt Alford’s Philip, Elizabeth and Benjamin Wieland won the award with their Limousin steer ‘Golden Nugget’.

In a decision which disappointed thousands of punters last week, the Ekka was cancelled due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

But the show went on for the Led Steer Carcass Competition at Nolan Meats Gympie, while the Prime Beef Competition was also held offsite at Silverdale Saleyards. The on-the-hoof Led Steer classes were cancelled.

Benjamin Wieland said it was a “fantastic win for the family”.
