Scenic Rim Doctor honoured for commitment to medicine and community

A Mt Tamborine doctor has been honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division (OAM) for his service to medicine and medical administration.

Dr John Youngman has lived on Mount Tamborine all his life and said medicine runs through his blood.  

“Both my parents were doctors, so I suppose it was a sure thing.

“My mother was the first general practitioner up here and then I came to work in the 1970s with her in her practice.”

After working as a GP in his mother’s practice, Dr Youngman moved to the Gold Coast hospital where he became the Director of the Accident and Emergency Department for a few years and in 1981, the Acting Medical Superintendent.
