Brisbane Lions Springfield stadium on track for 2022
1 min read

The state-of-the-art Brisbane Lions AFL stadium at Springfield remains on track for completion in early 2022.

Construction on the $70 million project began in March before the Covid-19 restrictions were in place but General Manager for Infrastructure, Strategy and Government for the Brisbane Lions, Jake Anson said there were concerns that the project would not be on track.

He added that they were delighted they left enough leeway for the unexpected pandemic.

“We’ve certainly had our share of challenges this year,” Mr Anson said.

“The construction industry did have a hard hit.”

“We were lucky we allowed enough time for the project.”

The stadium will be named the Reserve Community Arena and is considered the first of its kind in professional sport with equal opportunity for men and women.

It is designed to cater to 10,000 spectators and will include a childcare facility and a health café. It is divided into five key precincts - an entry plaza, grandstand spectator area, Lions training and administration facility, grassed spectator area  and a complementary activities area.

The $44.5 million announcement by the State Government to fund a carpark to assist with the influx of people during the season will benefit both the stadium and the train station, says Development Manager of Springfield City Group, Chris Lewis.

“This will provide support to rail but also the game through the AFL facility,” Mr Lewis said.

Springfield City Managing Director, Raynuha Sinnathamby said the unusual design of the stadium will be ground-breaking.

“They’ve never before designed facilities for women, and childcare facilities,” she said.

“The women are really happy because they’re being consulted.”

As the project masterplan has been 10 years in the making, Ms Sinnathamby says she is thrilled to watch the early stages of the project unfold.

“All good things take time.”
