BOONAH State High School hosted a Wellbeing Expo last week using funding from a program run by the State Government.
The school’s guidance teacher Andrea Schumacher said the $500 grant had been used to create an event where everything from mental to physical health and wellbeing was on display.
The school’s principal Dan Marrone said he was proud of the hard work his teachers put in planning the expo and it was part of a ‘it takes a village’ approach.
“The community is behind and involved with the school, wellbeing expos like this one is something that can continue to grow every year,” he said.
“It is important the community becomes aware of what is available in terms of support, whether that’s financial wellbeing, physical or social emotional wellbeing. “There are a lot of services in our community but unless you’re acutely aware of them you can’t access them.”
He said the expo presented an opportunity for people to come together and see what was available to them in Boonah.
“Some issues are not always discussed in public and this is a tightknit community but we care about our kids and our people so there is a lot on offer by way of support,” he said.
He said Boonah State High School was well resourced with good facilities that could enable it to become a hub or centre for the community.
“Most children in the community go on to attend this high school, and about 80 percent of our parents attended it too,” he said.
“There is a unique sense of community here and when a community comes together to acknowledge that we all have ups and downs, that’s where the real strength shines through.”
Mr Marrone said he’d like to see the expo expand so that primary schools were involved and more vendors and health practitioners came on board.
